2012 NOLA Trip

Starting the weekend by sampling seasonal Strawberry Abita in our hotel:

We spent the next morning exploring the Lower 9th Ward by bike.  The area is still struggling to recover, but there are signs of hope.

One of the famous "steamboat houses" in the Lower 9th.

We grabbed po' boy sandwiches from a neighborhood shop and at them in Ron Lewis's yard before checking out the House of Dance and Feathers.  The House of Dance and Feathers is a small museum in a tin-roofed shed in Ron's back yard.  The museum is devoted to Mardi Gras Indians and second line culture and is full of ornate costumes -- with thousands of beads, like the piece below -- hand-sewn by Ron and other Mardi Gras Indians. Ron also has a Katrina display about what life was like in the aftermath of the storm.

Ron became a community advocate in the wake of Katrina, and he is a great ambassador for his neighborhood.  He is also a sweet man with lots of great stories.

The museum, open by appointment only.

A party bus parked on Ron's lawn.  Does it work?  "Yeah, we take it to Saints games." What happens on the bus?  "Wildin'"

Thanks for sharing your stories with us, Ron.

The mighty Mississippi, as viewed from the banks of the Lower 9th.  The Lower 9th is not located on land that is further below sea level than other parts of the city.  It is actually on relatively high land because it is located right by the river. The area suffered such devastating flooding after Katrina due to the collapse of the man-made canals that surround it.

Katrina Memorial in the Lower 9th.

The NFL had just announced it's season-long suspension of Saints coach Sean Payton.  The people of NOLA were furious.

Our lovely boutique hotel:

We always find street musicians we love while walking down Royal street.  Doreen and her family are some of our faves.

Alley that contains one of my favorite restaurants in the world, Green Goddess.

We popped into Irvin Mayfield's jazz club and were treated to Irvin's surprise visit.  He and the other trumpeter, Kid Chocolate, ended the night by parading through the club and playing their hearts out while standing on the bar.  Only in NOLA ...

One of our missions during this trip was to pick up some fun local art.  We came across this sweet young man, Ashton Jefferson, and we knew right away we had to buy some pieces from him.  This particular piece is done in a style Ashton created and calls "Jefferson Splash."

The traditional view of Jackson Square.

The mighty Mississippi.

Signs you only see in NOLA, Part 1.

Signs you only see in NOLA, Part 3.

Pranav making a new friend. This was soon after our Cajun boat captain came across a clueless boater unknowingly intruding in the private waters: "I've been looking for you.  I threw your truck in the bayou." The intruder, clearly unable to decipher the captain's Cajun accent: "Oh, ok.  Thank you."

Oh, my NOLA ... thanks for another great trip!

Lisa and Matt's Chicago Wedding Weekend Extravaganza

Between catching up with folks in town from around the country and doing our best to help the couple throw an amazing event, Lisa and Matt's wedding weekend felt like a family wedding for us. We were absolutely EXHAUSTED by Sunday afternoon, but it was well worth it.

Welcome Dinner

Following the wedding rehearsal, Lisa and Matt hosted a casual Friday night welcome dinner at an Irish pub. I loved seeing familiar faces walk through the door all evening

The couple:

Roomies:

Some of the Chicago crew (Pranav and I think Aaron, in the gray jacket, looks like tennis player Andy Murray):

Some the first friends I made at Michigan Law:

Cali kids Mike and Kelly:

Our tallest Gujrati friends:

Lynda (Lisa's sister):

Wedding Day

The bride getting ready at home:

Flowers given to some of us gals to wear.  They were perfect, because a lot of us think of this particular shade of green as Lisa's signature color:

The wedding venue was the stunning and funky Salvage One, which is a reclaimed furniture store. This ceremonial area and rows of pews are a permanent fixture in the store for the numerous weddings Salvage One hosts.

I was beyond honored (and extremely nervous) to be asked to officiate the ceremony.  Here I am in my official capacity waiting with Matt and his brother Justin for Lisa to arrive.

Lisa's mom arrives.  The family was placing bets on how many times Lisa's mom would cry during the weekend.  We quickly realized that it was impossible to keep count because the tears were falling nonstop.  Here she goes again:

Matt's proud parents:

The bridesmaids, sister Lynda and niece Noelle:

Here comes the bride ...

I themed the ceremony around legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler's famous speech championing "the team, the team, the team."  Lisa and Matt, two of the biggest Michigan fans we know, seemed to dig it.

Such a cool venue!

The vows:

Hilarity when Matt kissed Lisa much more dramatically than she had anticipated.

More hilarity when the maestro cued the recessional music before the ceremony ended.  Hold up, buddy. I still have more to say!

Okay, now we're done.

Lisa's dad Larry Lauer looking dapper. Lisa's mom fighting hard not to cry.

Relieved the ceremony was a success. Ready to party.

VARP discovers a cool pottery nook during the cocktail hour.

The reception was upstairs, where the store displays the dining tables it sells.  We actually dined on those tables, so each table and chair was unique and eclectic.

Our table, 8 Mile Road. We were expecting lots of Detroit references and were not disappointed. The personal touches extended to the list of signature cocktails, which Matt had carefully researched and concocted. My favorite was the Hermione Granger, which included cardamom bitters.  Yes, please.

Matt, signature cocktail in hand, leading the charge on the dance floor.

Sisters.

In light of Lisa's reputation for slipping, falling, and spilling, not a single person was surprised that this happened. Note Lynda's amused expression.

No use crying over spilt wine.  Back to dancing.

The soulful band.

Congratulations, friends!

Talking shop with Myke at the after-party.

In light of Matt's reputation for falling asleep anywhere, another unsurprising moment.
